Donald Hughes began his career with the Wichita Falls Fire Department on May 14, 1984 and graduated from the 35th Fire Academy in August of 1984.

 In February 1996 he was promoted to Fire Equipment Operator and served in that position until November 1999 when he was promoted to Fire Lieutenant.  He served in the Lieutenant position until February 2002 when he was promoted to Captain, and served in that capacity until November 2011.

In November 2011 he was promoted to Battalion Chief in Operations and served in that position until December 2012, and at that time was transferred to Battalion Chief in charge of the Training Division. While serving in Training, he accepted an offer of the Deputy Chief of Operations position in August 2014.

Cody Melton

Cody Melton

Deputy Chief Cody Melton has been with the Wichita Falls Fire Department since 2007 serving in multiple ranks in the Operations Division from Firefighter to Captain. He was promoted to Fire Marshal in September 2020 and to Deputy Fire Chief in May 2023. He believes that the members of the Wichita Falls Fire Department are the organization's most important asset, it is their abilities, knowledge and experience that makes them one of the best fire departments in the State of Texas.  

His certifications through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection include: Master Structural Firefighter, Instructor III, Plans Examiner, Master Fire Investigator, Arson Investigator, Master Fire Inspector, and Fire Officer II. In October 2019, he graduated from the Texas Fire Chief’s Academy with the professional designation of “Certified Fire Executive” and has also graduated from Fire Executive Management Training at the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas (LEMIT) at Sam Houston State University. Melton is also a certified Peace Officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Texas in 2009, earned his Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree through Texas A&M International in 2022, and is a Certified Fire Marshal through the International Code Council.
